Review: If it Makes You Happy by Claire Kann

Not going to lie, this book took a while for me to dive into, there was so many things happening in the first 50 or so pages. I finally kind-of understood the storyline after that, but the plot didn't go anywhere much. It follows Winnie, a girl of colour who's on summer break in Misty Haven, and follows themes such as friendship, loyalty, family, health, and love. That being said, huge bonus points for the detail that went into a lot of the characters, and it really allowed me to connect with some of the characters on a quasi-personal level. Rating: 3.5/5 Thanks to Swoon Reads/Feiwel and Friends/Macmillan for the advanced reader's edition, which I got at the Sydney Writer's Festival!

Review: When the Ground is Hard by Malla Nunn

A stunning novel, set in Swaziland. Focusing on a Adele, a mixed race girl, it explores themes such as friendship, poverty, grief, and racism. A wonderfully written perspective, with in-depth character descriptions and an easy-to-follow but thick enough plot. Rating: 4/5 Thanks to Allen & Unwin, who provided this book to me at the Sydney Writer's Festival!

Review: Eyes of Tamburah by Maria V. Snyder

An exciting new series, that started with a bang! Featuring Shyla, a "sun-kissed" outcast, living on the outskirts of the underground city of Zirdai, the book follows her plight when accused of stealing a priceless treasure. The book wonderfully built the 'world' Shyla lives in, and Snyder has beautifully constructed a very in-depth plot for the most part, although I felt that the end of the book was a little weak for my taste. Big points for the book being rather descriptive, and having an AMAZING set of characters that I adored (or hated- depends on the character)! Rating: 4/5 Thanks to NetGalley and Harlequin Australian for the digital galley copy! The ISBN of the edition read is: 9781489252807.
